    Theolytics is an Oxford-based biotechnology company developing a pipeline of viral therapies for cancer. The company will be rapidly expanding over the next 12-months to drive the development of research stage activities into clinical trial candidates.


    We are looking for a Bioinformatician to join our small, dynamic team. The successful applicant will be supporting the identification and development of therapeutics at the interface of cancer and virology. The role will include: analysing viral diversity; guiding biological experiment design; predicting viral evolution; and taking an active role in designing and executing strategic goals.


    This position represents an excellent opportunity for someone looking be a key enabler for the development of an early stage product through to clinical application. We are looking for a fast learner, happy to jump in when required in what will be an exciting work environment.


    • Development of bioinformatics software to streamline genomic data processing; 
    • Creation of high confidence diversity scores for viral analysis;
    • Collaboration with our scientific team to guide experimental design;
    • Work with external specialists in areas such as machine learning;
    • Collation and presentation of findings at both internal and external meetings; and
    • Contribution to a range of key strategic documents including: reports, presentations, and patent applications.

    Candidate Profile

    Required skills and experience include:

    • A PhD in or equivalent experience in Bioinformatics or Computational Biology;
    • Experience applying biostatistical methods; and
    • Experience in NGS/omics data analysis tools and algorithm development.

    Advantageous skills, experience and attributes include:

    • Scientific understanding of virology and/or cancer;
    • Experience with long read deep sequencing technologies including PacBio and/or MinION;
    • De novo assembly experience, and detection of minor variants in heterogeneous sets and tracking variant evolution; 
    • Experience in viral metagenomics;
    • Experience assessing and quantifying point mutations and gene rearrangements;
    • Experience training and applying classic machine learning models, such as linear regression, random forests and SVMs, as well as deep learning models;
    • A track record in managing projects and supervising junior employees; 
    • A collaborative attitude with a flair for problem-solving; and
    • High motivation for, and commitment to, research on anticancer therapies and drug discovery. 


    Compensation: £50,000 - 55,000 per annum

    Location: Oxford

    Contract: Full-time, Permanent contract
